Swimming Safety for Dogs

A Guide to Keeping Your Pup Safe in the Water

The first time Sadie tried swimming, it was clear she wasn't a fan. She hesitated at the water's edge, unsure of this new adventure. We didn’t push her, letting her explore at her own pace.

Over Memorial Day Weekend, we decided to give swimming another shot. With a little encouragement, Sadie tentatively dipped her paws into the water.

To our delight, Sadie began doggie paddling with newfound confidence! She splashed around, working on her swimming skills and learning not to drink the water. It was heartwarming to see her enjoying the cool water on a warm day. It’s going to be a great summer!

Sadie's transformation from hesitant pup to enthusiastic swimmer reminded us of the importance of patience and perseverance. As always, we kept a close eye on her to ensure her summer swimming fun was safe and enjoyable.

To help ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for all dogs, we've put together some essential tips on swimming safety. Dive in and keep your pup protected in the water!

Sadie’s Summer Swimming Tips

Choose the Right Location: Not all water bodies are safe for dogs. Opt for dog-friendly beaches, lakes, or pools. Avoid areas with strong currents or tides.

Supervise at All Times: Never leave your dog unattended near water. Even strong swimmers can get into trouble quickly.

Use a Life Vest: Equip your dog with a life vest, especially if they are not strong swimmers or are swimming in unfamiliar waters.

Rinse After Swimming: Saltwater, chlorine, and algae can irritate your dog's skin. Rinse them off with fresh water after their swim.

Watch for Signs of Fatigue: Dogs can tire quickly in the water. Keep an eye out for signs of exhaustion, such as heavy panting or struggling to stay afloat.

Teach Them to Exit the Pool: If you have a pool, ensure your dog knows how to get out safely. Teach them to use the stairs or add a ramp structure for easy in and out.
